Crimson Hedgehog Cactus
There are many different kinds of hedgehog cacti. The Crimson hedgehog cactus is a small barrel shaped cactus that grows in clumps of a few to a hundred stems. The stems are cylindrical in shape and are up to 1 foot long and 1 to 2 1/2 inches thick. There are about 9 or 10 ribs on the stem. This cactus has no leaves and has chlorophyll in the stems. The stems of this Crimson hedgehog are

shorter and more tightly packed together than other hedgehog cacti. ||
Chain Fruit Cholla
The chain fruit cholla looks as much like a tree in the desert as a cactus possibly can. It has a central trunk from which sprout many spiny "branches". It is commonly found in dry, sandy soils of bajadas, valleys floors, and plains of the Sonoran and Chihuahua Desert, south Arizona and northwest Mexico. It is found at elevations up to 4,000 feet above sea level.

hink of first? Maybe it's sand, heat, or Gila monsters, but most likely it's cactus. Cacti are probably the most memorable characteristic of the desert. In all of the Speedy Gonzales cartoons, Speedy is always leading his unsuspecting predators into a cactus. And what is in the background as Wily Coyote accidentally blows himself up with Acme dynamite? Cacti of course!
Desert: Chihuahuan Desert of southern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico Height: Up to 8 feet Joints: Thick, tubercled, covered with gray spines Flowers: From deep purple to yellow and white Fruit: Flesh, spineless, yellow in winter Elevation: 2,000-7,000 feet

The Desert Tortoise can be found in the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts of southern California, two of North America's four deserts. They inhabit semi-arid grasslands, gravelly desert washes and sandy canyon bottoms below 3,500 ft.
The Desert Tortoises is a land dwelling turtle belonging to the Testudinidae family. The Desert Tortoise is also known as a gopher tortoise because it belongs to one of 4 species of the Gopherus genus.

Because of the extreme temperatures and lack of water, desert plants in the United States must adapt to survive. Plants do this by adjusting physically and behaviorally to take advantage of the elements in their surroundings that benefit them the most.

Roadrunner - (Geococcyx californianus) A large ground bird belonging to the cuckoo family. It measures about 58 cm (23 in) and has brown plumage streaked with white above and on the throat, and white plumage below. It also has a bushy crest, blue and red eye rings, long, spindly legs, and a long tail. The roadrunner seldom flies, depending on its quick feet to take it out of harms way. It eats small snakes as well as insects, lizards, and, occasionally, the young of ground-nesting birds.(added by colton) :)
Exceptionally agile, the mountain lion can leap more than 18 feet in height and more than 20 feet in length. It can drop more than 50 feet from a vantage point onto prey without suffering injury bye colton. :)

I was pleased to find a desert pool brimming with water from the recent rains. Located at the edge of a slickrock outcrop, this depression had collected runoff. As I scouted the edge of the pond for aquatic life, I observed numerous amphibian tracks in the soft sand. Knowing that many toads and frogs are active at night, I decided to return in the dark to check out the action. (added by colton) :)
The common name and species name, punctatus (which means “spotted”) are derived from the reddish warts that cover the uppersides of the body. Bufo is Latin for “toad.” The Spanish word for toad is “sapo.”
Red-spotted Toads occur from central Texas westward to southeast California and into Mexico and Baja California. A disjunct population (“disjunct” refers to a population of a species that is widely separated from other populations of the same species) occurs in western Oklahoma. Though they breed in watery sites, from water troughs to river edges, these toads have been found in upland areas over one mile from water. They have been found in prairie dog towns in grasslands, no doubt utilizing the cooler underground burrows.by Andera Kirker(:
The Cactus Wren lives in the arid and semi-arid deserts of southwestern United States and the chaparral of southern California and northern Mexico. The Cactus Wren is usually found below 4,000 feet. The California chaparral has hot and dry summers and humid and cold winters. It normally gets about 6 inches of rain per year.

DESERT BIOME
These desert climates are found in low-latitude deserts approximately between 18° to 28° in both hemispheres. these latitude belts are centered on the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, which lie just north and south of the equator. They coincide with the edge of the equatorial subtropical high pressure belt and trade winds. Winds are light, which allows for the evaporation of moisture in the intense heat. They generally flow downward so the area is seldom penetrated by air masses that produce rain. This makes for a very dry heat. The dry arid desert is a true desert climate, and covers 12 % of the Earth's land surface.
Temperature Range: 16° C
Annual Precipitation: 0.25 cm (0.1 in). All months less than 0.25 cm (0.1 in).
Latitude Range: 15° - 25° N and S.
Global Range: southwestern United States and northern Mexico; Argentina; north Africa; south Africa; central part of Australia.
